Reading a Tunisian Crochet

Pattern Notation

Note: All Aklori Designs Self-Published Patterns use the same notation. These are defined in the patterns but here is a more in-depth look.

RP - Return Pass. All tunisian crochet rows consist of both a forward pass and return pass.
The Standard Return Pass is: Chain 1, yarn over (YO) and pull through 2 loops. Repeat [YO and pull through 2 loops] until only one loop is left on the hook.
However, the return pass can include various increases and decreases and may change during the pattern. Be sure to use the return pass defined in pattern.

[ ] - Square Brackets are used to define a group of stitches to be repeated. For example, [Tss, Tks, Tss2Tog] means there is a repeat consisting of Tss then Tks then Tss2Tog.

( ) - Parenthesis are used to denote multiple stitches that are worked into the same stitch. This can be any number of stitches. For example, (Tss,Tmss) means that first a Tss is worked, then a Tmss is worked into the same stitch as the Tss. There is no limit to the number of stitches that can be worked in the same stitch.

* - Multiplication used to denote a repeat. For example, Tss*3 means the next three stitches are all Tss.

Blocking
All patterns include blocking instructions. At a minimum, most patterns require gentle blocking to remove curl.

Block gently - Wet or steam block (depending on fiber content) without distorting the shape. Pin down any portion that is curling.

Block enthusiastically - This will require stretching the fabric and pinning down so that the fabric stays stretched while it dries. This method is required for any fabric with lace or eyelets.

Block to size - for garments and other fitted items. Use the diagram provided to block the item to the dimensions indicated.
